Who’s On Your Investment List?

Hey friends,

Let’s pretend for a moment that you’re Warren Buffett—not in dollars, but in discernment. Your job? Choosing people to invest in for life.

And not based on money, inheritance, good looks, or charisma—but solely on character.

Sounds interesting, right?

Well, it gets real fast.

In a speech at the University of Georgia, Warren Buffett posed a question that might just sick with you as it has stuck with me:

If you could invest in a friend and get 10% of their income and life success for the rest of your life—who would you choose?

He wasn’t talking about raw talent or privilege. He meant who, through their daily choices, behaviors, and mindset, would be a good bet?

And then… he flipped it.

Who would you short?

Who are you pretty sure is heading toward a slow-motion train wreck—and why?

Now before you go running off with a notepad and naming names (or maybe you already have!), let’s slow this down and use it for what it is—a mirror.

When I did this exercise, I’ll be honest—I expected to write down the “most successful” people I knew.

But the one I ended up betting on?

He’s not the wealthiest guy I know.

Not the flashiest or the loudest.

He’s just… good. Steady. Hard-working. Grateful. He loves his family. He follows through. He doesn’t pretend to be perfect—but he’s the same man in private that he is in public. And that integrity? It’s rare. It’s valuable. It's… investable.

When I wrote down his name and his traits, I had a humbling realization:

These are the traits I need more of.

Not ambition. Not hustle. Not even brilliance.
But humility. Consistency. Heart.

On the flip side, the “short list” (no pun intended) made me squirm. Because some of the traits that made me cautious about others? I saw flickers of them in myself.

Pride. Defensiveness. Temper. Cynicism.

Ouch. Conviction doesn’t always feel sweet—but it’s always good.

What This Teaches Us About Who We Are (And Who We’re Becoming)

You know what’s crazy? We’re often blind to our own character flaws—but we can clearly spot them in others a mile away. Right?

And without hesitation and with full confidence. 😬

It’s like noticing your friend’s toxic relationship in 10 minutes… while they take 10 years to see it.

So what if we used that awareness not to judge, but to grow?

✅ Who would you invest in today?

✅ What traits make them so worthy of that investment?

✅ And how can you become the kind of person that someone else would gladly stake their life savings on?

Now, this Isn’t about money—It’s About Legacy
