When Life Reminds You What Truly Matters

Sometimes, the news that shakes us also wakes us—to what really matters.

This past week held two of those moments for me.

On Tuesday, I learned a longtime friend, Gabe, had passed away.

Then Friday came. Another loss—Rob, a respected business associate, gone too soon.

Both men were more than colleagues. They were the kind of people who chose relationships first, always. Warm-hearted, salt-of-the-earth men. And above all, they were family men—husbands, fathers, present, intentional, and deeply committed to those they loved.

And just like that… they were gone.

Grief is a Whisper and a Wake-Up Call

There’s no way to brace for it, is there?

Gabe was just a few years older than me. Rob, a few years younger. Good men doing good work in the world.

Their passing was completely unexpected—and it knocked the wind out of me.

It’s these moments that make you pause. Makes you stop the striving. The scheduling. The rushing. Because you remember:

We’re not promised tomorrow.

And while that can feel overwhelming, it’s not meant to scare us. It’s meant to wake us.

It’s meant to shift our eyes and realign our hearts—to remind us what (and who) is truly most important.

Look, I get it. You’ve got goals to meet. Bills to pay. Deadlines to hit. You’ve got responsibilities and roles and rhythms that keep the wheels turning.

But here’s the hard-won truth:

If we’re not careful, the things we build can end up building over us.

We don’t need to abandon our work—we just need to make sure it’s aligned with our why.

Make sure your work and business supports your life, not swallows it.

Make sure your schedule includes not just what’s urgent, but who’s important.

Make sure your ambition doesn’t crowd out your attention to the people right in front of you.

Living All-In and All-Out

This week, I’ve hugged my wife, Nicole, a little tighter. Held onto my boys longer. Fully focused on them—not just in passing, but with presence. I didn’t just glance at them; I saw them. Heard their laughter, and felt the weight of what a gift that is. Saturday we celebrated our youngest son’s 13th birthday—a milestone that felt more meaningful than ever.

I’ve remembered that this life is a vapor—but every breath of it is a gift.

And the best way to honor those who are no longer with us? To live grateful, present, and all-in with the time we do have.

A Simple Practice for Deep Gratitude

Here’s what I want to invite you to do this week:

Think of three people God has placed in your life—right now.
Spend a few quiet minutes thanking God for them by name.

Then, if you’re able, tell them. Call, text, write, or hug. Just say, “I’m grateful for you. You matter to me.”

You never know what kind of light that small word of gratitude could shine into someone’s day—or what it might heal inside of you.

As Paul says in Philippians 1:3,

“I thank my God every time I remember you.”

Let’s not wait for loss to remind us of what we love.

Tell Them Today!

Don’t let the moment pass. Don’t let your gratitude stay silent.

Tell your people what they mean to you.

Live like it matters—because it does.
