What Is Your Truth?

Today’s note is inspired from a very direct and incredibly poignant message I heard from Craig Groeschel, Pastor of Life Church and top thought leader in business.

It is intended to challenge and grow us. I said us, because everyone can benefit from this, especially myself.

If you have kids or no kids. If you are married or single. If you’re young or old. If you can read this, it’s for you.

It’s become quite popular in our culture to highlight and be sensitive to how everyone “feels”. Nothing wrong with that, as we absolutely should respect everyone’s freedom to feel how they feel.

The phrase, “You do you boo” comes to mind. Or, the very common, well-intentioned encouragement to, “follow your heart, it will lead you to the right path”.

The problem with that thinking, and something we all need to become far more aware of, is feelings are not reliable. They are subjective and always based on emotion. They are not based on absolute Truth.

Every time you let your feelings determine your “truth” things become very dangerous.

The following is a working definition and understanding of what is TRUEabsolute, constant and true for everyone, everywhere, all the time.

Please read that definition again. If that makes sense to you, and you can accept it as a reasonable definition, what follows should be positively thought provoking.

Your perspective is real. Your experiences matters. Everyone has a story. And your story is valid and important. You should definitely be able to share it. But what you experience and what you feel doesn’t equate to absolute truth.

Many times people confuse Truth with Perspective. When we do this, it causes the problem that truth can change over time. That leads to thinking and acting because something “sounds” and “feels” right to you, then it must be true.

Just because you Feel It, doesn’t make it true. Ouch!! Punch to the solar plexus.

The Truth steps on your toes. The Truth can be difficult to hear. Why? Because the Truth often requires us to change. Double Ouch!! Right-cross to the head.

The lie is so much more convenient and comfortable. That is why “your truth” is so appealing. Your truth allows you to do whatever you want.

If truth is not constant. If truth changes, it will lead you down a very slippery slope….

  • Morality becomes subjective because right and wrong are relative.

  • My perception determines what’s true.

  • I am the source of truth.

  • “If it’s true to me, you can’t question my Truth”… Oy vey! Danger, Danger, Will Robinson!

This goes for anything and everything we do in our daily lives. The decisions we make the thoughts we create, the actions we take. From the food and drink we give our bodies, to the sources we choose to read and watch, to the words we speak and how we do our work.

My point and encouragement is the reminder that we can get into trouble when we define what’s true on what sounds or feels right.

Secondly, to present a difficult but loving question, What if your truth is a trap? What if your “truth” is really not the truth?

This doesn’t mean we have to live perfectly—none of us can. But here's the good news: His grace is unwavering, His mercy never fails, and His truth is a constant we can rely on. His grace, love, and truth are yours to embrace, no matter where you are or what you've been through.

I surrender it all to Him because His truth is the foundation that never shifts.

With truth and love,

Your friend,

Brock

P.S. A wonderful Truth to start with…You Are Chosen. You Are Loved. You are Treasured. You Are Worthy.
