What Freedom Sounds Like

The flags are still waving gently on porches. The fireworks have faded. The last of the potato salad might still be hanging out in the fridge. Memorial Day weekend has come and gone—but the heart behind it should never be packed away.

Naturally, I found myself thinking a lot about freedom—not in the grand, distant way it’s often talked about, but in the close-up, lived-in kind of way.

The kind that sounds like:

• Kids laughing barefoot in the backyard
• A family saying grace before Sunday dinner
• Grandparents sharing stories around the kitchen table
• A high school band playing the Star-Spangled Banner at a small-town parade
• A moment of silence… as Taps plays and tears quietly fall

These are the sounds of freedom.

They may seem ordinary. But they’re anything but.
Because every one of those moments was made possible by someone’s sacrifice.

There’s a verse I keep coming back to every Memorial Day season. It’s John 15:13—

“Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one's life for one’s friends.”

That kind of love—the kind that says “I’ll go, even if it costs me everything”—is the love we pause to honor on Memorial Day.

And it’s the love that Christ modeled first.

Jesus gave His life so we could live in eternal freedom.

Our servicemen and women gave theirs so we could live in earthly freedom.

And in both cases, we are the beneficiaries of a gift we could never fully repay—but must never forget.

Memorial Day marks the unofficial start of summer. And what a gift summer is.

It’s slow mornings and late sunsets. It’s baseball and hotdogs and campfires and s’mores.

But maybe more than anything—it’s a chance to live intentionally.

To celebrate the freedom we’ve been given by stewarding it well.
To speak with kindness.
To spend time with people who matter.
To raise our kids with faith.
To work hard.
To rest well.
To live with purpose.

Because the most meaningful way to honor the sacrifice of others is to live a life worthy of it.

So, This Week...

Let’s keep our hearts anchored in gratitude.

Let’s raise our kids to understand the difference between a “day off” and a day of honor.
Let’s make space for silence.
Let’s wave the flag a little higher.
Let’s pray for the families who are still grieving.
Let’s soak in the joy of summer—but never forget the cost of it.

Freedom isn’t free. But it was freely given.

Let’s live like we know that.

With faith and deep appreciation,
Brock

P.S. You know what freedom also sounds like? A screen door slamming shut behind a child chasing fireflies, laughter echoing off the lake, or a quiet whisper of “thank You, Lord” as the stars come out. However you celebrate this season—do it with joy. It was bought with love.
