Use the Difficulty

Let’s talk about something real today: difficulty.

Not the kind that merely annoys you—but the gut-punch kind. The disappointment. The betrayal. The lost job. The sickness. The grief so deep it swallows your breath.

Or maybe it’s the lingering sting of someone else’s bad decision slamming into your life like a door you never asked to open.

Here’s what I know: You didn’t choose this storm. But you can choose your stance in it.

And that’s where I want to share a powerful little story—one that stuck with me the moment I heard it. It’s from the legendary actor Michael Caine, and it goes like this:

“I was rehearsing a play when I was a very young actor. I had to enter a scene, but as I opened the door, I found a chair had been thrown in the way. I peeked through and said, ‘I’m sorry, sir, I can’t get in. There’s a chair here.’ The actor looked at me and said something I’ll never forget: ‘Use the difficulty.’”

“I asked, ‘What do you mean?’ And he replied, ‘If it’s a comedy, trip over it. If it’s a drama, pick it up and smash it. But use it.’”

*You just might one to pause here, think on that statement. Re-read it and write a quick note of how that resonates and what it means to you.

Michael never forgot that moment. He went on to teach it to his children. Every time something goes sideways, they say it:

“Okay... how can we use the difficulty?”

Now, you and I may not be actors on a literal stage, but we’re walking into scenes every day. And sometimes, life throws a chair in the doorway.

You know what I’m talking about:

• A loved one walks away.

• A diagnosis brings everything to a halt.

• A plan crumbles right when you thought it was coming together.

But here’s the God-glorifying truth: That obstacle may be the very thing that strengthens you, humbles you, refines you, and sets you on a higher path.

💥 It’s like judo: You use the weight of what was thrown against you to push forward through it.

But here’s the key…

You won’t see the possibility if you’re only staring at the pain.

You’ve got to look up.
Look higher.
Ask God, “What do You want to do through this?”

Because He’s still good. Still working. Still faithful.

Even in the middle of the mess.

Galatians 6:9 reminds us:

“Do not grow weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”

So here’s my loving challenge to you today, friend:
Don’t just endure the difficulty.
Use the difficulty.

Let it strengthen your witness.
Let it deepen your faith.
Let it open a new door that wouldn’t have existed without the storm.

Because what the enemy meant for harm, God can absolutely use for GOOD.

And remember:

You are Worthy, Valued, and Loved.
Your story isn’t over.
Your faith is working.
And your breakthrough could be just one surrendered prayer away.
