The Rules That Set Us Free (Part 1)

Hey friends,

Let me ask you something bold:

Are you the driver of your life... or just the passenger?

Now, I’m not throwing shade. We all slip into autopilot mode—especially in the comfort of home or the familiarity of daily routines.

But if we’re not careful, habit can become a hiding place. And then one day, we look up and wonder how we drifted so far from the life we meant to live.

That’s why this week, I’m sharing some personal rules—guidelines that don’t restrict, but refocus.

And before you picture me with a clipboard and whistle, know this:

I don’t follow all these rules. I want to. But I’m a work in progress (aren’t we all?).

Still, these serve as reminders—little nudges toward becoming the man, husband, dad, and friend I hope to be.

I’m sharing them in two parts. This week: Home + Other People. Next week: Personal Growth + Work.

Home: Where the Day—and Your Legacy—Begin

Your home is sacred ground. It’s not just where you rest—it’s where you launch.

Here are a few house rules I’m holding onto:

• Make your bed. Even a quick tidy says, “I’m here. I’m showing up. I’m stewarding this day.”

• Prep tomorrow’s meals tonight. Stack the deck in favor of a strong start. Protein, fruit, a grab-and-go shake—simple, solid wins.

• Buy the two-ply. It’s a statement. Of self-respect. Life’s too short for sandpaper toilet paper.

• Accept the dents and scratches. Don’t let your stuff define you. The stories matter more than the shine.

• Greet them at the door. Stop what you’re doing. Rise. Hug them like you missed them.

• Walk them to the door. A sendoff says, “You matter.” It costs 15 seconds and changes the tone of someone’s whole day.

• It’s a home, not an investment. Let your house be a haven, not a spreadsheet. If it makes money, great. But if it makes memories? That’s the real wealth.

Other People: Because the Quality of Our Life Is the Quality of Our Relationships

Let’s not wait until things fall apart to cherish what matters.

These are the rules that keep love active—not assumed.

• Say “I love you” at night and in the morning. Before the phone. After the dreams.

• Look your kids in the eyes. Every time they speak. Even when you’re busy.

• Say the kind thing. Don’t hold it in. Don’t let insecurity rob someone of encouragement.

• Spin. Yep, just spin in a circle. It’s silly. And healing. Try it when you’re mad or sad.

• Don’t lie. Not even “white” ones. Clarity is kindness.

• Never resist a generous impulse. If your heart nudges you to do the kind thing—follow it. Even if it’s awkward. Especially then.

• Give the gift. Don’t wait for a birthday or an excuse. If something reminds you of someone—send it.

• Invest in memories. Things fade. Shared moments grow more valuable with time.

• Weekly date night. Hanging out around the fire pit while playing each other’s favorite throwback songs. Singing, dancing, laughing (Nicole and I love this one). It can be as simple as popcorn on the porch or as planned as a fancy dinner. But protect the time.

• Fifteen minutes, one-on-one, with each child. Not to teach. Just to be. Play. Talk. Let them lead.
