This one? It just might do both.

It’s about a man named Bob May, his daughter Barbara… and a certain reindeer with a shiny red nose.

But this isn’t just a story about Christmas.
It’s a story about pain, perseverance, and purpose.

And what happens when God uses heartbreak to deliver hope; not just to one family, but to millions.

It was December 1938. Snow on the ground, tinsel in store windows… but inside a cramped Chicago apartment, Bob May was holding his four-year-old daughter in his arms, trying not to cry.

Barbara’s mother, Evelyn, was dying of cancer.

And when Barbara looked up through tear-filled eyes and asked,
“Why isn’t Mommy like the other mommies?”
Bob’s heart broke in two.

He didn’t have an answer. And in that moment, he didn’t have much else, either. No money for presents. No home filled with cheer. Just a deep desire to give his little girl a reason to smile on Christmas morning.

Bob wasn’t a famous author, just a humble copywriter at Montgomery Ward, trying to get by during the Great Depression.

But he had a pen. And a heart full of memories of what it felt like to be different.

As a child, he was small, shy, often bullied. The “misfit.” The kid who didn’t quite belong.

Now, as a grieving father, he faced the very thing he feared most: being unable to give his daughter hope.

He didn’t have money for a Christmas present. But he did have something else.

He had a story.

Bob poured his pain onto the page.
And from the depths of grief came a reindeer. Not just any reindeer, one that was mocked, excluded, and called names… until his difference became the very thing that saved the day.

Rudolph, like Bob, didn’t fit in. But in Bob’s story, being different wasn’t the problem.

And on Christmas morning, Barbara opened the handmade book her father wrote just for her. A story written from sorrow, wrapped in love.

The story caught the attention of Montgomery Ward’s manager. Soon, “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” was handed out to children visiting Santa across America.

By 1946, over six million copies had been shared.

Even more miraculous? The CEO of Montgomery Ward returned the rights of the story back to Bob; a rare, generous act that forever changed his life.

Bob remarried. His family grew. The story continued to spread joy.

Then, his brother-in-law, Johnny Marks, turned the book into a song.

It was rejected by big names including Bing Crosby, until Gene Autry said yes.

In 1949, “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” hit the airwaves… and soared to become one of the best-selling Christmas songs of all time.

All from a father’s heartbreak. All from a child’s question.
All from someone who felt like a misfit, until God used his “different” to deliver something extraordinary.

Friend, this story isn’t just about Rudolph. Or Bob May. Or even Christmas.

It’s about you.

It’s about every part of your story that feels “less than.” Every difference you’ve ever tried to hide. Every heartbreak that still aches. What if… those very things are what God will use to light the way for someone else?
