Purpose is a Gift You Give Away.

The Question I Keep Hearing

Lately, I have had more conversations than I can count with people asking some version of the same question.

Seasoned business leaders have asked it. Young professionals just getting started have asked it. Friends, customers, parents, dreamers, builders, and a whole lot of people standing somewhere in the middle have asked it too.

“How did you know this was the path?”

“How did you decide to do what you’re doing?”

“How did you keep going when it cost so much?”

I usually smile, because the answer sounds simple. But simple does not mean small.

I believe purpose is this:

Purpose is the best of what I have to help others.

That is it.

Not a perfect plan. Not a lightning bolt. Not a fancy title. Not a passion that makes every day easy.

Purpose is taking the best of what God has placed in your hands, your heart, your story, your gifts, your lessons, your scars, your courage, and using it to help somebody else.

Purpose Is Not Just Passion

For a long time, I think many of us were taught to chase passion.

Find what makes you excited. Follow what lights you up. Do what you love.

There is truth in that. But passion by itself can be a little slippery. It can rise and fall depending on the season, the stress, the sleep, and whether the day has gone sideways before 9 a.m.

Purpose is steadier.

Purpose asks a better question.

Not just, “What do I love?”

But, “Where can I give my best in a way that helps someone else?”

That question has shaped so many of the decisions I have made in life and in this business.

It is part of why Dulci Sweets has never just been about chocolate. We love extraordinary chocolate, of course. We are Gratefully Serving People Who Love Extraordinary Chocolate. But the deeper work has always been about people.

A gift that says, “I see you.”

A message that says, “You matter.”

A moment of sweetness that reminds someone they are not forgotten.

That is Goodness Created to be Shared.

Purpose Helps You Decide What Is Worth It

One thing I have learned is that success always asks for sacrifice.

It asks for time. Energy. Late nights. Early mornings. Hard choices. Patience when the results are slow. Faith when the path is not clear.

And here is the honest truth.

If what we are doing does not feel worth it, we will eventually stop sacrificing for it.

That is why fulfillment matters.

Fulfillment is not the same as comfort. Fulfillment is what happens when you know your sacrifice is serving something meaningful.

If purpose is the best of what I have to help others, then fulfillment is the result of helping others with the best of what I have.

That fulfillment becomes fuel.

It helps you keep going when the road is harder than you expected. It reminds you why the work matters. It keeps your heart soft when your schedule is full.

So how do you know if you have purpose?

Look at the opportunities in front of you. Look at the relationships in your life. Look at the decisions you are making.

Then ask:

Will this allow me to give the best of what I have to help others?

That question can become a North Star.

It can help you say yes with confidence. It can help you say no with peace. It can help you stop comparing your path to someone else’s, because your purpose was never meant to look exactly like theirs.

Maybe your best is leadership.

Maybe it is encouragement.

Maybe it is teaching, building, creating, feeding, organizing, praying, listening, serving, or simply showing up with uncommon kindness.

Do not dismiss what comes naturally to you. Sometimes the thing you think is “just what I do” is the very thing someone else desperately needs.

I do not believe purpose is hiding from us.

I believe it is often right in front of us, waiting for us to stop asking, “What can I get?” and start asking, “What can I give?”

The best of what you have may not feel big to you.

But placed in the hands of God and offered with love, it can become exactly what someone else needed at exactly the right time.

That is purposeful work.

That is meaningful living.

This week, take five quiet minutes and ask yourself:

What is the best of what I have, and who needs it right now?

Then do one brave, loving thing with the answer.

With gratitude and so much joy,
Brock and The Dulci Sweets Family

P.S. Speaking of purpose, we will be closed May 26 through June 7, reopening Monday, June 8, for two pretty wonderful reasons. First, we are celebrating Mike, also known as The Candy Man, and his amazing wife, Mindy, on 25 years of marriage. What a gift. Second, incredible construction work is happening on our new building, and we truly believe it will amaze and delight our customers. We cannot wait for you to see what is becoming a beautiful little light on the hill. Thank you for cheering us on, praying for us, and being part of this sweet story.
