Patriotism Is Not Dead
Friends,
An Amazon delivery driver walked toward a home recently and noticed something most people probably would have passed without a second thought.
The American flag hanging outside had become tangled.
It wasn’t his house.
It wasn’t his flag.
And fixing it certainly wasn’t part of his delivery route.
But he stopped.
He carefully untangled the flag.
Straightened it.
Stepped back.
Then he saluted it.
And here’s the part that got me: he apparently thought nobody was watching.
The homeowner’s Ring camera happened to capture the whole thing.
What that camera captured was more than a kind gesture.
It captured something I believe our culture desperately needs to rediscover:
Honor.
No stage. No audience. Just a quiet act of honor when he thought nobody was watching.
The Little Things Aren’t Little
We live in a time when loving your country can feel like something you have to explain, qualify, or even apologize for.
I don’t believe it should be.
America isn’t perfect, because people aren’t perfect.
We can recognize our failures, work to make things better, and still be overwhelmingly grateful for the freedoms God has allowed us to enjoy.
I can worship Jesus Christ above everything while thanking God that I get to call America home.
That flag represents more than fabric.
It represents generations who served.
Families who sacrificed.
Veterans who came home carrying wounds we could never see.
And heroes who never came home at all.
That’s why this little moment mattered.
Respect still matters.
Character Shows Up When Nobody Is Watching
Jesus said:
“Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much.”
Luke 16:10
We often look for leadership in titles, influence, success, money, or authority.
God pays attention to the little things.
Do we tell the truth when lying would be easier?
Do we treat the person cleaning the building with the same dignity as the person running it?
Do we stop and help when we could easily say, “That’s not my problem”?
That is where character lives.
Cultures don’t lose their values all at once.
They erode when enough ordinary people decide the little things no longer matter.
But I believe the opposite is also true.
Cultures can be rebuilt when ordinary people decide the little things matter again.
Maybe It Starts With Us
More gratitude.
More responsibility.
More respect.
More people willing to do the right thing simply because it is right.
So here’s my challenge for you this week:
What is one small act of honor you can choose, especially when nobody is watching?
Do it.
Then teach your children why it matters.
Honor God.
Serve people.
Love your family.
Respect your country.
Live with integrity.
Patriotism isn’t dead.
And neither is honor.
Sometimes we simply need someone to remind us what both look like.
