Maybe You SHOULD Bite Off More Than You Can Chew
Have you ever bitten off more than you could chew?
I don’t mean dinner.
Or dessert.
And coming from a chocolate company, that should tell you something.
I mean the project. The dream. The business. The assignment you felt called toward, even though every logical calculation said:
This is probably too big.
I saw something recently that gave me an unforgettable picture of that.
A seagull pulled a shark out of the surf.
Yes. A shark.
The shark was longer than the bird and thicker than its head.
I stood there waiting for the seagull to realize it had made a terrible miscalculation.
It never did.
That bird grabbed the shark, worked it backward, swallowed the entire thing, and then stood there looking around as casually as if it had eaten a french fry.
That got me thinking…
most of us have heard the opposite advice our entire lives:
Don’t bite off more than you can chew.
Be realistic.
Play it safe.
Pick something you know you can finish.
There is wisdom in planning well.
But I also believe there are moments when God places something in front of us that is intentionally bigger than our current strength, knowledge, resources, or comfort.
Because a goal you already know you can reach may change your circumstances.
A God-sized goal changes you.
It makes you pray differently.
Work differently.
Learn differently.
It forces you to become more disciplined, more resilient, more resourceful, and more dependent on God.
And it reveals whether faith is simply something we talk about, or something we are actually willing to build our lives upon.
God-sized goals require God-sized faith, and serious effort.
Faith isn’t sitting around waiting for God to magically do the work.
Faith gets its hands dirty.
Faith makes the call.
Faith studies.
Faith sacrifices.
Faith gets back up.
Faith shows up again tomorrow.
Faith does everything it can do, and trusts God with everything it cannot.
Will every enormous goal work out exactly as we imagined?
No.
I’ve missed some of mine by a mile.
But here’s what I’ve learned:
Sometimes the greatest result of pursuing a giant goal isn’t reaching it.
It’s becoming the person capable of carrying something bigger.
You grow stronger.
Wiser.
More courageous.
More prepared.
And more dependent on the One who called you forward in the first place.
So perhaps the old advice needs a small adjustment.
Don’t recklessly bite at everything in front of you.
But when the opportunity matters…
when the mission is bigger than your comfort…
and when you genuinely believe God is calling you forward…
maybe it’s okay to bite off more than you can chew.
Then pray.
Work.
Learn.
Stretch.
Trust.
And chew like crazy.
Because the goal that feels too big for you today may be exactly what God uses to prepare you for who you’re meant to become tomorrow.
And somewhere out there, a seagull is probably wondering what all the fuss is about.
Your friend,
Brock
P.S. This one hits especially close to home right now. We’ve bitten into an enormous, uncomfortable, faith-stretching undertaking: restoring, rebuilding, and revitalizing a historic Ashland building into the future home of Dulci Sweets, Co. Some days, it absolutely feels bigger than us. That may be the point. We’re doing the work, trusting God with what we can’t control, and believing this old building is being prepared for something very special. We can’t wait to share the journey, and eventually welcome you inside.
