Honoring Graduates of Every Kind

Graduation season is here—and if you're anything like me, your heart swells just a little when you see those caps flying, hear the Pomp and Circumstance, and catch sight of proud parents dabbing away tears. It’s a time full of excitement, unknowns, and hope. But as we celebrate the bold steps ahead, I’ve been thinking a lot about the different ladders our graduates are climbing.

Some are heading off to college, and we cheer them on with full hearts. But let’s not forget those whose ladders look a little different—those entering the trades, joining the military, or jumping straight into the workforce. Their path is just as meaningful.

It takes guts, grit, and a whole lot of purpose to take the road less spotlighted.

And you know what? That road is paved with just as much potential.

Truth is, success doesn't come from the title above your desk or the name on your degree—it comes from living a life aligned with your values, your calling, and your willingness to keep climbing, even when the ladder looks different than everyone else's.

Nearly 30 years ago, I believed success meant climbing the corporate ladder. And for a short while, it worked. But eventually, I realized that ladder was leading me somewhere I didn’t want to go. So I changed ladders—and you’re reading this because I did.

The lesson? Success isn’t about the ladder. It’s about the climb, the direction, the purpose—and the people you have with you on the way up.

That’s why this verse speaks so loudly to me during this season:
“Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and He will establish your plans.” — Proverbs 16:3 (NIV)

Not if you go to college. Not if you land the perfect job. But whatever you do. If your heart is surrendered and your hands are faithful—God honors that. That’s a promise our graduates (and all of us) can take into every new beginning.

So today, I’m cheering for all the grads. Not just the ones with diplomas in hand, but also the ones holding tool belts, enlistment letters, small business plans, or resumes for their very first job interview. They are brave. They are venturing forward. They are building something. And their work matters.

And while we’re at it, let’s cheer for the unsung heroes, too—the parents who sacrificed, the teachers who stayed late, the coaches who pushed and believed, the mentors who offered quiet wisdom when it was needed most.

None of us get anywhere alone. Behind every graduate is a whole team of people who helped them get here. If that’s you—thank you.

Every graduate deserves a standing ovation. Not just for where they’re going—but for the courage it took to begin.
