From First Practice to Championship

One of the most important lessons I’ve learned as a coach and as a person is that success is never guaranteed, but the effort you put in always matters.

That’s the heart of the story I want to share with you today – a story about a group of boys, including my son Brexden, who committed to five simple principles that became their foundation: honor God, give your best, have fun, encourage others, and expect to win.

These weren’t just words on a whiteboard; they became the focus of everything they did. As a result, the team didn’t just get better—they grew closer. They didn’t just achieve victory—they experienced growth, unity, and a renewed belief in themselves.

From the first practice to the final buzzer, it was clear these boys weren’t just focused on the scoreboard. They were focused on each other. They gave their best every day, through sweat, struggles, and setbacks. But what really made them stand out was their attitude—their belief in themselves and in each other. They had no idea what was ahead of them, but they embraced the process with open hearts and unwavering faith.

As the season unfolded, it was amazing to watch them grow—not just in skill, but in unity. They had a blast playing together, but what really stood out was how they built each other up. Every success was celebrated, every challenge was faced together. It wasn’t always pretty, and it wasn’t just about winning—it was about becoming better individuals and stronger teammates.

And then, against all odds, they completed a perfect season—undefeated at 14-0—and sealed it with a championship win.

But here’s the thing: the real victory wasn’t in the trophy they earned. The real victory was in the relationships they built, the lessons they learned, and the unbreakable bond they created. As a coach and a father, I couldn’t be more proud of the young men they’ve become. I have no doubt that this is only the beginning for them—and I wouldn’t put a limit on what they will accomplish.

What struck me most about this journey is that it mirrors so much of life—whether in business, family, or personal growth. The success we achieve is never really about us alone; it’s about the people we surround ourselves with, the way we support and uplift each other. It’s about working together, believing in one another, and knowing that when we give our best, we can truly achieve greatness.

Just like these boys, we all have the potential to be champions. When we honor God, give our best, have fun, encourage each other, and expect to win, there’s nothing we can’t achieve.

So as I reflect on that undefeated season and the lessons learned, I can’t help but feel grateful. Grateful for the chance to coach these boys, grateful for the opportunity to share these moments with my son, and grateful for the reminder that when we work together in faith and love, there’s no limit to what we can accomplish.
