Friendship is Essential—Here's Why
According to the Survey Center on American Life, the number of Americans who say they have no close friends has quadrupled since 1990. Meanwhile, the average number of close friends has dropped from six to just two. That’s not just a cultural shift—it’s a crisis.

As screens replace in-person conversations, loneliness creeps in, quietly affecting our health in devastating ways. Former Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy compares loneliness to smoking 15 cigarettes a day.

It’s not just sad—it’s dangerous.

A Lesson from Camp Bethany
Recently, I had a powerful reminder of how authentic friendships can flourish when we disconnect from screens and reconnect with people.

My son Camden embarked on a new adventure at Camp Bethany, a Christian camp tucked away in the serene beauty of Lakeville, Ohio.

Without phones, electronics, or distractions, campers engage in nature, play games, share meals, and worship together.

We sent Camden off, aware he knew no other campers there, trusting his big heart and childlike faith to carry him through.

Of course, there's a certain vulnerability in walking into a group of strangers—no screens to hide behind, just real, face-to-face interactions. But Camden embraced it wholeheartedly.

After a transformative week, upon picking him up, Camden ran up to me glowing with excitement. “Camp was awesome!” he declared, eyes bright and heart full.

He spoke of fun stories around campfires, meaningful teachings after breakfast, cool activities, spirited worship sessions, and unforgettable friendships.

These weren't surface connections formed by casual likes and quick comments online; they were genuine bonds rooted in shared experiences, authenticity, and mutual encouragement.

His new friends immediately invited him to visit them the very next week.

• Fun tip and worthy action to meet a new friend: Never resist a generous impulse. Do the nice thing for the person if you feel like doing the nice thing for the person, even if you don’t know the person.

Breaking the Loneliness Loop
Social scientist John Cacioppo explained that loneliness can rewire our brains, making us reluctant to reach out.

But here's the beautiful part: one small act—like Camden's openness at camp—can interrupt this loneliness loop.

Even the simplest gesture, a genuine conversation, a shared laugh, or an act of kindness can profoundly change someone's day, and perhaps their life.

On July 30, the International Day of Friendship reminds us that connection isn't a luxury—it’s essential.

Let’s use Camden's example at Camp Bethany as a healthy reminder:
