Celebrating Grandparents

It’s the little moments that make life BIG. These words ring especially true as we approach Grandparents Day this Sunday, September 8th. Grandparents are often the unsung heroes of our lives, quietly shaping our world with their wisdom, love, and endless patience. They are the keepers of stories, the guardians of traditions, and the ones who show us that life’s greatest moments often come wrapped in the simplest gestures.

I’m reminded of Kent Nerburn’s powerful story, “The Cab Ride I’ll Never Forget.” It’s a story that beautifully illustrates how the smallest acts of kindness can create lasting memories—especially for those who have spent a lifetime caring for others, just like our grandparents.

The story is about a cab driver responding to a call from a quiet part of town in the early hours of the morning. When he arrived, the building was dark except for a single light in a ground-floor window. Many drivers would have honked and driven away, but this driver walked to the door and knocked. A frail elderly woman answered, dressed in a print dress and a pillbox hat as if she had stepped out of a different era. She asked the driver to take her on a drive through the city—not to rush to her destination, but to revisit the memories of her past.

For the next two hours, they drove through the places that held the essence of her life—her old workplace, the neighborhood where she had lived with her husband, the ballroom where she had danced as a girl. As the first light of dawn creased the horizon, she finally asked him to take her to her destination—a hospice.

When they arrived, the driver refused to take payment, and the woman hugged him tightly, saying, “You gave an old woman a little moment of joy.” That hug and those words resonated deeply with the driver.

He didn’t pick up any more passengers that shift. He drove aimlessly, lost in thought. For the remainder of that day, he could hardly talk.

“What if that woman had gotten an angry driver, or one who was impatient to end his shift? What if I had refused to take the run, or had honked once, then driven away? What if I had been in a foul mood and had refused to engage the woman in conversation?

How many other moments like that had I missed or failed to grasp?

We are so conditioned to think that our lives revolve around great moments. But great moments often catch us unaware, beautifully wrapped in what others may consider a very small one.

When that woman hugged me and said that I had brought her a moment of joy, I do not think that I have ever done anything in my life that was any more important.”

Much like the driver’s experience, our grandparents have a way of turning ordinary moments into extraordinary memories. They teach us that life isn’t about chasing after grand achievements but cherishing the small moments of connection and love. It’s in these moments that we find true joy and fulfillment.

For those who are fortunate enough to still have grandparents with them, why not make this Grandparents Day special. Make them feel cherished and valued—not just with thoughtful gifts or cards (though their favorite chocolates and candy classics are always a sweet touch), but through the simple act of being present with them. A phone call, a visit, or a heartfelt conversation will absolutely mean the world to them. After all, it’s the little moments that make life BIG.

And for those whose grandparents have passed on, this day can be a time of reflection and gratitude. We can still honor them and love them for who they were and the profound impact they had on our lives. Their legacy lives on in the values they instilled in us and the memories we hold dear.
