Celebrating Excellent Dads

An excellent dad is more than a provider and protector; he is a cornerstone of his family, embodying a myriad of virtues that shape the lives of those he loves. In a world that promotes comfort and convenience far more than sacrifice and hard work, happiness of the moment over preparation for the future, lord knows we need more men to step up to be excellent fathers. 

This Father’s Day and beyond, let’s honor the men who embrace the monumental responsibility and profound gift of fatherhood. While encouraging the men around us with the wonderful truth – If you intend to be the man God created you to be and the man we need you to be, you absolutely have the means to do so. And it’s absolutely up to you, no one else.

The journey of fatherhood is not marked by an "easy button." There are no perfect fathers, just excellent dads who rise to the occasion with unwavering commitment. Every dad knows that no one-size-fits-all manual exists for parenting, and the trials are as unique as each child. Yet, it is this very unpredictability that defines the essence of fatherhood—a purpose-driven role that tests, challenges, and ultimately transforms a man.

An excellent dad is a tapestry woven with traits that reflect the depth of his character. Love is the thread that binds his actions, ensuring that his family feels cherished and valued. Dedication to his family’s growth and happiness is unwavering. Reliability means that his family can always count on him, and his trustworthiness instills confidence. Honorable in his deeds, he sets a moral example, while generosity reflects his willingness to give without expecting anything in return. Commitment to his role as a father is evident in his daily actions, demonstrating that he is fully engaged in the reality of his family’s needs.

The world desperately needs men who show up—not as passive spectators, but as active participants in their families and communities. An excellent dad understands that his legacy is a God-given role, one that shapes the future of those around him. Whether as a biological father, a surrogate father-figure, or a mentor, his influence is profound and far-reaching.

As one of my father friends, Lawrence Funderburke, said so well, “Children, irrespective of age or background, yearn for the AAA blessing from their fathers: affirmation, appreciation, and acceleration. Affirmation through love and support; appreciation through recognition of their value and purpose; and acceleration through instilling drive, determination, and discipline.” When this blessing is absent, children struggle to find their place in the world, often leading to a life adrift.

In today’s affluent society, the necessity of growing up has become optional for many, leading to a pervasive sense of meaninglessness. Historically, men had no choice but to grow up and shoulder responsibilities. Today, however, an excellent dad chooses to rise above the lure of entertainment and consumerism, embracing his role with purpose and conviction.

Here’s to the men who embody the virtues of an excellent dad. They are the protectors, providers, and mentors who shape the future, one family at a time. Their legacy is a testament to the strength, love, and dedication that define true fatherhood.
